Based at Otters' Haunt, Kopjeskraal Road, opposite Parys, North West Province, South Africa

The Dome is so big it can only be seen from space - as in the image here (false colour highlighting the features). Come to our Vredefort Dome information centre to learn all about the mightiest asteroid impact of them all. The Unesco World Heritage Site draws tourists, school and student groups, scientists and adventurers. We are 2km from the town of Parys, on the Vaal River in central South Africa. Get hold of us to arrange your visit and plan a tour to suit your interests - from geology to battlefields, from driving and hiking to cycling and rafting.
Stay at Otters' Haunt Wonderful riverside accommodation in the Dome with direct access to many sites of interest.

We advise you to print this map and bring it in the vehicle. DO NOT rely totally on GPS.

1hr 20 min, 130km, from central Johannesburg on the N1.

From Johannesburg, take the N1 and pass through the Grasmere tollgate. Continue on over the Vaal River. Turn off from the N1 1km before the KroonVaal tollgate, crossing over the N1 to join the R59 to Parys (20km).

Entering Parys, follow the road as it makes a right angled bend around the town, which takes you into Bree Street (the main street full of coffee bars and art shops). Drive to the only traffic lights on Bree. Turn right at the lights to Potchefstroom. Cross the Vaal Bridge, and within 150 metres turn left onto Kopjeskraal Road. (This road is a loop and returns to meet the Potch road later).

Drive about two km down Kopjeskraal, and Otters’ Haunt, at left, is marked by a big white wall and gate with the name. If you pass Khaya iBhubesi, you have gone too far!

At our gate, slide the gate open. Come straight down the driveway to Reception.
