At any time of the year, weather in the Dome can be very hot, very cold, windy, dry, wet, thundery or dark. This is a mountain environment so come prepared.
The trails in the Vredefort Dome can be very rugged with loose stones and gravel. Walk carefully, watch your step. There are some spots where you must descend cautiously and ask for help if necessary.
Go to the Dome briefings pages for the map location to our place and rates for our services.
MEET US AT OUR BASE
How to find us: map location
We are across the Vaal River from Parys, about 3,5km from town. Take the road to Potchefstroom over the bridge and about 200 metres later turn left onto Kopjeskraal road. We are 2,3 km down the road, white wall on the left just after Dome Inn.

Our guide will tell you fascinating facts about the Dome which you will miss if you rush off. Do not litter. Take nothing, only pictures.
Please keep your voice down during the hike so as not to scare the wildlife and not to disturb other hikers.
PARKING AND RESTROOMS
Normally we start at trail heads where there are facilities such as toilets and change rooms. We choose places with secure parking but cannot guarantee that. You may be able to buy cokes at some venues.
Your fee covers only our guiding service and not entry to the trail. Most trails are on private property and the owners charge between R50 and R75 per person in most cases. Bring cash.
You are required to sign our indemnity and Covid statement, and may have to sign a second waiver at the trail heads. You must declare if you suffer from any chronic medical condition such as high blood pressure or asthma.
WHERE TO MEET
Come to our base, Otters’ Haunt on the Vaal, for an initial briefing about the Vredefort Dome. We then drive to the trail head.
It is advisable to start very early in summer – we recommend 7am – before the sun get hot. Times have been agreed with your organisers – please do not be late.
Thank you and we look forward to a satisfying hiking experience with you!
