Briefing – Dome cycling

Cyclists in the Dome

We cater for the beginner and intermediate rider rather than those who do mountain biking as a sport. We are however happy to host all kinds of riders and will advise you on the best outings to suit you. We do not mix tough competitive riders with beginners (unless you want it that way). For intermediate and less experienced riders we advise you to take a guide. Other more independent riders can get our trail maps and we arrange access to private land.

Here is information about cycling from Otters Haunt near Parys. Graeme and/or Karen Addison organise and may guide.

Once you’ve booked, read the next pages: Cycling Kit, Cycling Safety and Unaccompanied Cycling.

Call to discuss

Tell us whether you are
– an experienced competitive rider
– a hardy trail rider
– an intermediate rider capable of most moderate challenges
– Someone who rides for fun but is no expert
– a complete beginner or one who has not ridden for years

We also need to know:
= your age/s and level of fitness
= how far or how many hours you wish to ride
= whether you have your own bike and what condition it’s in
= or whether you wish to hire a bike
= and do you wish to stay over?

There are lots of great routes in the Vredefort Dome and Bergland on gravel and off road. They range from very easy and mostly flat on bsck roads to rugged, steep and challenging in the mountains. Anyone can take part, provided yiu know your limits.

Bikes are for hire or bring your own. Families welcome. Trails can range from a few km to 100km or multiday sleep over. Our qualified expert cycling guides can be hoted and will tell you all about the Dome area as you go.

We do organised trail outrides for groups with vehicle support. A trailer with a bike rack may carry bikes from point to point, with food packs and kit in the vehicle. It is a 4×4 seating 5 people. Trails may range from secondary country roads on tar or gravel to limited offroad on jeep tracks and single track.

Serious off road cycling is not vehicle supported. Some mountain bike trails are graded red and black, only for hardy and experienced riders.
